This article is an upgrade from one of the older posts I created on the site. Dedicated to great names (Eddie Merckx and Joaquim Agostinho) in cycling and one of the most prestigious races of the world tour (Tour de France).
In the last article I told you that I was going to introduce a new block in the menu today. Unfortunately it’s not going to happen yet. I am building this block, but I decided to be a perfectionist, so it will take a little longer.
Soon, I will finish the upgrades of the older articles. Inaugurate the block of magazines by dates. I will bring a magazine with the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci. And I will put an article of one of the most wanted and rare magazines published in Portugal.
I hope you enjoy this site that belongs to everyone,
Eddie Merckx and Joaquim Agostinho on the cover
I present you this article dedicated to Flama magazine number 1168, published in 1970.
On this cover we can see Eddy Merckx, probably the world’s greatest cyclist ever, and Joaquim Agostinho, the greatest Portuguese cyclist of all time, on the tour of France ’70.
The tour de France 1970 was won by Eddy Merckx with Joaquim Agostinho in 14th place.
Flama, a generalist magazine published in Portugal between 1944 and 1976. More than 1400 issues were published, and it was one of the publications in Portugal with the largest circulation.
Joaquim Agostinho on Tour de France 1970
Inside the magazine there is a report about Joaquim Agostinho on his performance in the 1970 tour, and in some cases making comparisons of the cyclist’s race in 1969, where he had reached the 8th place.
According to the report, Joaquim Agostinho, despite having scored worse than the previous year, was half the time behind Eddie Merckx who had also won the previous year. He also says that Joaquim Agostinho had very little help from his teammates, given that he was the head of the team. What happened was that some of his colleagues wanted the post of the Portuguese cyclist, and the director of the team was unable to meet the conditions for Joaquim Agostinho to have proper support. Another aspect is due to the cyclist’s lack of technical capacity, if we take into account that Joaquim Agostinho had only started running professionally for 2 years for Sporting Club de Portugal.
