The first magazines and newspapers I knew were during my childhood. My father had the habit of buying sports newspapers, my mother the TV magazines. At that time I already thought that sports newspapers were a bit reductive, most of the publications were related to Football. I’m talking about the 80s, other sports were practically non-existent in Portuguese publications. In fact, a bit like nowadays. Concerning my mother’s TV magazines, I was particularly interested in the covers. I would only read the content of TV magazines if they talked about some series or movie that was special to me. Some of those magazines also featured music and movie posters and they were always a great gift when they featured the artists we liked the most.
Nadia Comaneci on the cover
The magazine that I present to you today is Selecções Desportivas #7, published in 1978. The cover of this magazine features the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci. Inside we have the boxers Cassius Clay, Leon Spinks, and football player, José Torres.
Leon Spinks beats Cassius Clay
Leon Spinks is the new Boxing World Champion. Cassius Clay lost this final, and the title of champion.
In this publication, we have the life story of José Torres. One of the biggest names in Portuguese football. Played for clubs like Benfica, Vitória de Setúbal, and Estoril Praia. He played in several finals of the European Champions Cup with Benfica. He also won 3rd place in the 1966 World Cup in England.
The world star of gymnastics and sport in general, Nadia Comaneci, is preparing for another world championship. After becoming the Olympic champion, she also wants to have the title of world champion. Once again, the big opponents will be the Soviet gymnasts.
World Championship Football Argentina 1978
The next football world cup will soon be held in Argentina. Brazil is seeking its 4th title. The great absentees could be the Dutch Cruyff and the German Beckenbauer.
