Abolitionist John Wickliff Shawnessy (Montgomery Clift) estranges himself from high school sweetheart Nell Gaither (Eva Marie Saint) and begins a passionate love affair with wealthy southern beauty Susanna Drake (Elizabeth Taylor). He is forced to marry her when she falsely tells him she is pregnant, but even after Susanna confesses the truth to him, he still maintains the marriage for love. Upon returning to Susanna’s family farm, he discovers that she is hiding a dark secret that little by little drives her crazy. Years pass, the couple has a child, and the American Civil War begins. In one of her outbursts, Susanna flees south into the battle, taking her son with her.
