Colonel John Marlowe leads three regiments in a 700 km incursion behind southern lines to destroy a railway that will lead to Vicksburg, the main Confederate stronghold. They are joined by Hannah Hunter, an enemy spy who knows of the plan, and Major Henry Kendall, a doctor who frequently clashes with the colonel because he does not approve of his methods.
